With Ava’s swift exit, Zev was left with the enormous responsibility of raising his baby daughter while somehow continuing his career as one of Las Vegas’ top entertainers. Zara’s maternal grandparents would step up in a major way after Ava’s unexplained departure by offering Zev their support in raising Zara. They would keep their granddaughter during the regular school year, while he would have her every summer. While Zev initially refused the offer and had gone on hiatus for five years, he would eventually agree to arrangement. Zara would stay in Pittsburgh with her grandparents as she entered Kindergarten and spend her summers in Los Vegas and Boston with her father.
Zara had always been accustomed to the quiet and humble living that the neighborhood of Bloomfield in Pittsburgh provided. She was a normal child who picked up the great passions of her grandparents, which mostly consisted of Steeler football and cooking. However, once it was time for Zara to be plucked from Western Pennsylvania to be in the presence of her bigger-than-life fathers, things felt different. Zara would be spoiled by Zev, and as she got older, she discerned that such special treatment was given to her so that his absence did not seem so unforgivable. Truth be told, Zara preferred the aging home situated on the rolling hills of Pittsburgh over the million dollar estate in Boston.
Zara’s identity grew stronger with age as she picked up her grandmother’s side business of wellness products enhanced by a meticulously cared for garden and some pagan rituals. With a growing clientele, Zara and her grandmother became an unexpected duo. Zara would listen to her kin and mentor conjure up ailments and the concoctions perfect for healing it. The young teenager would then be responsible for creating the product and packaging. Her business acumen and socializing skills were undeniable, and her grandmother proclaimed that summers with Zev Zetina had its benefits after all.
The first day of her senior year in high school would be wrecked with tragedy. Zara had cut her summer time with her father short to go back to Pittsburgh to spend time with friends. Zev had been preparing for a new live television event, one that would end up costing his life. Wrecked with the guilt and horror of witnessing (along with millions of other viewers) the death of her father, Zara battled severe depression as she went through the milestone of Prom and Graduation without the presence of either parent. Wanting to understand and learn more about her father, Zara attended Harvard so that she could be closer to the Zetina family which were all from Boston. Eventually, Zara would graduate with a Bachelor’s and received her MBA from the Ivy League School, as well.
While the concrete jungle of Boston was a major change from the quirky yet tough Pittsburgh, Zara has found her way in the city. As of this year, Zara finally moved into her father’s estate, which was passed onto her via his final will and testament. Zara owns the boutique ‘Bad Bruja’, which has been heralded as a gem but also condemned due to it’s owner holding weird hours. It’s true, Zara will never be a 9-5 person by any means, and her store has been known to open from 5pm - 2am in the morning, only for it to be closed for the following two days. The store’s own running hours have become a bit of a quest for devoted patrons who go for palm and tarot card readings to carefully made amulets and crystal charged oils.
Zatara traveled the world with his daughter and taught her to harness her magical abilities. Zatanna was later raised by strangers, however, when the evil witch Allura cursed Zatanna and prevented her from seeing her father. Zatanna was left to search fruitlessly for her natural parents.
Zatanna discovered her father's diary and created a stage persona for herself. Her quest to find her father led her into a brief affair with John Constantine. Later, with the help of the Justice League of America, Zatanna was able to lift Allura's curse and reunite with her father and later her mother. Tragically, Sindella died rescuing her daughter from the city of the Hidden Ones, while her father died saving her and the spiritual dimensions from the Great Evil Beast.
As a long standing member of the JLA, Zatanna fought countless super-villains and mystic threats. After the death of her father, however, she retired from active adventuring and continues to maintain her family home of Shadowcrest. She now lives in San Francisco, seeking a normal life while trying to preserve the balance of Earth's light and dark mystical community. In this role she serves as one of the Sentinels of Magic.
